13th Documentary Photography Prize
13th Documentary Photography Prize
14/07 — 31/10/2022
In cooperation with the Wüstenrot Foundation, the MdbK is showing the works of Sabrina Asche, Luise Marchand, Heiko Schäfer and Wenzel Stählin. The four photographers received the Documentary Photography Prize 13. The funded artistic positions take a documentary look at the world of work and the human body.
Sabrina Asche (*1981) deals with the situation of the many invisible women working in the Bengali textile industry in her work Photographing Textile Workers. The starting point of her work is the collapse of the Rana Plaza textile factory in the Dhaka district of Bangladesh. The photographer weaves the collected material into a multi-layered image and text collage in screen prints and a film. In her project Liquid Company - Flüssige Gesellschaft, photographer Luise Marchand (*1987) traces the transitions from work-life balance to work-life blending by getting involved in team-building processes as a member of a collective and studying the behaviour of the participants. She reflects on the dream of self-determination and the work-life balance that digitalisation is making a tangible reality in the 21st century. In Disciplined Production, Heiko Schäfer (*1983) focuses on the socio-economic conditions of the working world. He documents various visual, social and cultural habitats and sets them in relation to each other. The focus of Wenzel Stählin's work Constructions. Proposal for a Research are the normative ideas and ideologies associated with the white male body. He examines how the male serves as a yardstick for the architectural design of our living environment.
The four photographic perspectives provide an insight into current documentary practice. Methodologically, formally and technically, they explore in different ways the expiring boundaries of a photo-documentary reality.
The Documentary Photography Award of the Wüstenrot Foundation is considered one of the most important awards of its kind in Germany. The prize is aimed at photographers who deal with topics of the real world and use contemporary means to reflect on the definition of the representational character of photography. The Wüstenrot Foundation has awarded the prize every two years since 1994 in cooperation with the Museum Folkwang in Essen. The works are shown in a touring exhibition with accompanying catalogue in renowned institutions.
