"Across the street from my flat in West Leipzig is an abandoned building. One day I decided to go check it out and found a stack of old billboards, covered in dirt and years of water damage. I looked through the pile and came across one, that - being in the middle of the stack - remained preserved. A giant barcode with the words “Für Sie Drin” across the top. I don’t speak the German language, so I began to ask what this phrase meant. I received a variety of explanations: “in it for you”, or “what is inside, is for you.”
The idea of the exhibition of which was inspired by Leipzig’s character-defining advertising. The streets of Leipzig are marked in a humble aesthetic. Wheat-pasted posters and independent marketing stand in sharp contrast to the corporatized, digitally-dominant cities I am accustomed to, in America. This has entrained my focus specifically toward the physical, material make-up of media. All media is for us. Whether it’s an ad in a magazine, or a painting in a museum, we are the consumer; we are the audience. What is actually ‘in it for us,’ is underlying. Intentions and core structures shape a perceived reality, and the surface of what we see - or in the case of advertising - what we are “pre-sent” to see."
