April 7, 2027 would have been Wolfgang Mattheuer's 100th birthday. To celebrate this special occasion, the MdbK is presenting an extensive, multimedia anniversary exhibition.

The exhibition gives a new perspective on the multifaceted work of Wolfgang Mattheuer, one of the most important representatives of figurative allegorical painting in Germany and co-founder of the Leipzig School. His work brings together topics closely tied to his life in the GDR and that continue to resonate today: confinement, autonomy and escape. He grapples with the outside world and finds peace in his private life. The tension-laden relation between his own ideals and the realities of life permeates his entire body of work. This is evident in the paintings, sculptures and works on paper on display that date from the 1960s through to the 1990s, and in special objects from Mattheuer’s private life.

In addition to the exhibition, a wide range of educational programmes and events are on offer.
