The Collector Johann August Otto Gehler #3
26/11/2026 — 28/02/2027

The merchant Maximilian Freiherr Speck von Sternburg (1776–1856), one of the museum’s founding fathers, was a passionate supporter of the fine arts. At the age of 30, he began collecting paintings, drawings and graphic prints and put together an impressive art collection. Thanks to the Maximilian Speck von Sternburg foundation, which was established in 1996, the works he collected are today in the MdbK.
A selection of the drawings will be exhibited to commemorate the foundation’s 30th anniversary. The works span the period from the early 15th to the 18th century. The presentation provides a window into Maximilian Speck von Sternburg’s collection and also reflects his professional interests. As an internationally renowned agricultural economist, he collected many depictions of landscapes and animals.
