The BMW Photo Award Leipzig was presented for the first time in 2024. In the future, this prize will be awarded every two years to artists who either have a biographical connection to Leipzig and the region or who consciously engage with the city and its surroundings in their artistic work. It is a precondition that the work be in the medium of photography or in related visual media. As the three winners of the first BMW Photo Award Leipzig Margit Emmrich (*1949), Susanne Keichel (*1981) and Stephan Takkides (*1981) were chosen by the jury. All three deal with current social issues and work more or less documentarily. However, their means differ considerably. In their entirety, the approximately 120 exhibited works by the three graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig convey an impression of the diversity and quality of documentary photography in and from Leipzig.

The bilingual (German/English) exhibition catalog has been published by Sandstein Verlag. On 120 pages it contains an essay by Philipp Freytag and 143 mostly color illustrations. The volume is available for € 25 in the MZIN museum store and € 28 in bookshops.
