A World of Threads Programme
Tour of the exhibition
The exhibition presents a selection of approximately fifty tapestries of the Modern Age, alongside carefully chosen works from earlier periods. It highlights the remarkable aesthetic range of this world made
of threads. The tour of the exhibition spans all four floors of the MdbK:
It begins in the basement with outstanding representatives of Classical Modernism. In the »Faden Atelier« you can sew, braid, weave, and crochet. Experience the great community project »Millefleurs. A part of me is sprouting«.
On the first floor, visitors can study the grandeur of royal tapestry manufacturers of the Baroque period, which is juxtaposed with Margret Eicher’s provocative, female perspective from the twenty-first century.
The second floor continues the historical overview of the medium, featuring its medieval origins in the form of a Millefleurs tapestry. On the museum terrace, Fanja Bouts, a contemporary textile artist from the Netherlands, further envisions a map of the future.
On the third floor, the focus initially shifts to local tapestry production in Halle (Saale) during the GDR era, notably influenced by French models.
Public guided tours
Guided tours through the exibition in German language are taking place every Saturday at 3 pm as well as every Sunday at 11 am. Admission: 16 € / 8 € reduced.
Faden Atelier
Faden Atelier
Part of the exhibition is the Faden Atelier - a creative space within the exibition. It offers plenty of space for crocheting, braiding, sewing, and paper weaving.
Millefleurs: Every Thursday from 3 to 5.30 pm, handicraft groups introduce themselves and invite visitors to join in.

Millefleurs. A part of me sprouts: Ahead of the exhibition, numerous individuals and groups collaborated to crochet plants for a huge, permanently growing plant wall. A soundscape composed by A & the Universe provides the musical backdrop to this collaborative work. After the exhibition, the plant wall will be distributed among the participating institutions and groups for further use.
The only carpet in the exhibition actually lying on the floor is a collaborative work by the handicraft salon at the Ost-Passage Theater. The participants upcycled used plastic bags into so-called plarn (plastic yarn) and crocheted it into a circular carpet.
A bookshelf, equipped by Leipzig City Library, lokaltextil, and the MdbK library, offers in-depth information on the subject of textiles.
Connect!
Connect! is a project by elementary school students from Groitzsch Elementary School and forum thomanum in Leipzig. The connection between children from small towns and cities, as well as with the MdbK, is visible through textile elements at all three locations: using upcycled fabrics that the children collected and dyed themselves, they decorated public places in mid-November, such as the bicycle racks at the school and museum, and the fence at a bus stop near the forum thomanum.
