Katharina Schreiter
24/02/2025 — 22/02/2026

In her most recent work, Katharina Schreiter (*1984 Dresden) takes the architecture of the MdbK as the starting point for her photographic self-portrayals. In the foreground is the physical experience of the interior, the materials used and its substantial dimensions. By means of collage, the artist combines her own black-and-white photographs of the rooms with performative self-portraits filled with brightly coloured props.
Starting in the spring 2025, three of the five motifs are on display as large-format banners on the MdbK’s façade. There they will fulfil the function of the eponymous membrane – a delicate, thin skin that serves simultaneously as a separating and connecting layer between interior and exterior space. At the same time, two other photographs will enter into dialogue with the museum’s permanent exhibition.
Katharina Schreiter completed her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig in Tina Bara's Photography and Moving Image class in 2022. The artist book Meta K., based on her diploma thesis of the same name, was published in 2021.
In 2024 she was included in the group exhibition Win/Win. The Acquisitions of the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony at Museum Gunzenhauser (Chemnitz). Katharina Schreiter is currently completing her master student work with Joachim Blank. With the group of works entitled Membrane, she combines the two-dimensional medium of photography with aspects of spatiality.
To mark the project, a signed and numbered edition of all five motifs from the Membrane series in 40 x 30 cm format is published in a limited edition of six copies (+ 1 artist's proof) in a handmade cassette. The edition is available at MdbK at a price of €950.
