One of last year’s laureate of Villa Romana’s art prize was the Leipzig based artist Carina Brandes (*1982), who has produced a new series of artworks for her exhibition in the MdbK. Her analogue photographs taken in the twilight zone feature a surreal atmosphere through unusual angles of perspective and a feminist point of view. Carina Brandes puts herself into scene, capturing enacted plots in front of the camera’s lense with self-timer. Brandes exposes the photographs in her own darkroom in order to achieve the exquisite outcomes that her aesthetic contemplation demands.
