Max Klinger (*1857 in Leipzig, †1920 in Großjena) was a painter, sculptor and graphic artist whose art is primarily associated with Symbolism. From 1874 he was a pupil of Carl Gussow at the Grand Ducal Academy of Arts in Karlsruhe, before he moved to Berlin in 1875. From 1879 Klinger took private lessons with Émile Charles Wauters in Brussels. This was followed by stays in Berlin, Munich, Paris and Rome before the artist moved permanently to Leipzig from 1893. There Max Klinger became a professor at the Royal Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Trade (today: HGB) in Leipzig from 1897. In 1905 he founded the Villa Romana artists' residence in Florence. With his work, he is one of the outstanding representatives of stylistic art around 1900, whose forms of expression move between naturalism and symbolism. Max Klinger became known for his extensive graphic work. In addition to German-Roman traditions of neoclassicism, his paintings show an early tendency towards Pleinaerism and thus towards Impressionism. With the renewal of polychrome sculpture, made of different stones, he caused a great sensation. The combination of painting and sculpture in many of his works promoted the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk, which Klinger theoretically propagated in his 1891 publication Painting and Drawing.
